1. Am I allowed to work on-campus as a visiting International Student?
F-1 and J-1 students are allowed to work on-campus as part of their student status. F-1 students are eligible as soon as you start your classes. If you are a J-1 students you will need to obtain on-campus employment authorization through the International Student Services Office, which you can request through the ISS Portal.
2. How can I find on-campus jobs? Is there a job board?
Unfortunately, visiting students do not have access to the student job board. However, you can reach out to campus services and departments individually and go in person to see if they are hiring.
3. How do I get a Social Security Number?
Once you have secured a job offer, you will need to get a letter from your on-campus employer on letterhead stating your start date and containing your supervisors signature. You can then make an appointment with student services to have the letter signed by a DSO/ARO and get instructions on applying for the SSN.
4. How many hours per week can I work on-campus?
International students can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the semester.
5. If I am a Spring student, can I stay over the summer to work on campus?
While it is possible that some students find and participate in work opportunities over the summer, it is not possible for our office to issue a Form I-20 for the purposes of participating in work or research opportunities on campus. In order to prolong your stay in the U.S., you will need to enroll in courses via Summer Sessions.
By taking courses via Summer Sessions, our office will be able to extend your Form I-20 over the summer, thereby allowing you to remain in the U.S. Additionally, enrolling in a course will maintain your access to various campus facilities (buildings, libraries, gym, etc.). Without enrolling in a summer course, you may not have access to campus buildings, which may pose a challenge in participating in research.
