Yes, it is possible to take graduate-level courses (200+) through the Berkeley Global Access Program. That said, the process to enroll can be more involved. First, you should ensure that you meet course prerequisites. Secondly, in some cases you may need to ask the instructor for special permission to take the course. If approved, the instructor will provide an enrollment code you can use to enroll in the course. If admitted to the BGA Program, our academic advisors can walk you through the enrollment process for graduate courses.
Please know that some departments either place enrollment restrictions on visiting students and/or have limited seats available for visiting students. These departments include Economics, Business, Physics, Law, Environmental Design, Computer Science, Information and Data Science. Graduate courses in these departments will be especially challenging to get into.
Can I take graduate-level courses through the BGA Program?
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science courses: Courses listed in EECS, COMPSCI, and ELENG will be difficult to get into because of the high demand of current UC Berkeley students. This doesn't mean you will not get approved for courses in this department, but these can be challenging.
Data Science, Information, and Environmental Design courses: It is extremely unlikely you will be admitted to courses in these departments; Data Science (DATA and DATASCI), Information (INFO and CYBER), and Environmental Design courses, including Architecture (ARCH), City and Regional Planning (CYPLAN), Landscape Architecture (LDARCH), and Real Estate Development and Design (RDEV).
Economics and Business: The Economics department and the Haas Business department will each publish a limited list of 10-20 undergraduate courses you are allowed to take as a BGA visiting student. It is rare that a visiting student will be allowed in a graduate-level course in Economics or Haas Business.
Physics: The Physics Department allows visiting students to take up to two undergraduate courses.
